Co-author is the term used in publishing for any book written collaboratively by more than one author. When it comes to collaborative books, there are different roles you can play: you can be a lead author, co-author, or any other contributor.

The lead author is the primary writer, the person who is responsible for the majority of the content creation, and often takes charge of the book’s organization, editing, and overall direction. Generally the lead author holds the book’s copyright and, thus, has the legal right to sell, distribute, and offer additional licensing to third parties. While the lead author may be the book owner, these roles can also differ if the copyright is held by another entity, a person, publisher, or company.

Co-authoring a book not only divides the workload but also encourages exchanging ideas, creativity, and expertise, resulting in a rich, dynamic, and engaging final product. It also involves clear communication, effective planning, and establishing roles for each writer.

So, here are the five strategies for your successful Co-Authoring books:

  1. Clear Communication

Creating clear communication channels is crucial for a successful co-authoring project. Right from the start, make sure everyone is on the same page by being open and transparent in your communication. This means clearly outlining who does what, what they’re responsible for, and what’s expected from each co-author.

To make communication smoother, pick a central platform where everyone can connect and collaborate. This could be through project management tools, shared documents, or dedicated collaboration software. The goal is to have a common space where ideas can be exchanged, progress can be tracked, and discussions can take place. This not only helps in avoiding misunderstandings but also ensures that everyone is working together towards the same goals. It’s like having a virtual meeting room where all co-authors can contribute and stay updated throughout the project.

Clearly outline each co-author’s role in the project, specifying their areas of expertise and contribution. You should affirm and clarify each author’s responsibilities and establish all communication demands, anticipated progress track, timeline, and expectations regarding standards.

Try to be as clear, transparent, explicit, and straightforward as possible. People can seldom sum up another person’s train of thought perfectly. Miscommunication may cause delays and disagreements and get you further from the publication date. Acknowledging the other’s point of view (and letting go of the ego) is an excellent way to keep conflict at bay since it is inevitable to avoid all disagreements throughout the entire process.

Engage in collaborative decision-making processes. Your role may extend beyond individual tasks to participating in discussions and decision-making that impact the overall direction of the project. An illustrative example of this involvement is seen when selecting the optimal cover design and tagline for the book. As the lead author, your primary responsibility is to thoroughly research and choose the best cover design and taglines. Before presenting these options to the team for a collective decision, consider generating three distinct cover design and tagline choices.

Once you have prepared the options, share them with all contributing authors for their input and votes. It’s crucial that each author actively participates by providing their opinions and feedback during this phase. This ensures alignment among all team members regarding the book’s visual representation.

Be receptive and flexible in receiving feedback and suggestions from your co-authors. Demonstrating openness to different perspectives fosters a collaborative environment and reinforces a shared sense of ownership and commitment among the co-authors.

Understanding the decision-making dynamics within the team is key to maintaining a harmonious collaborative process. Regular communication and constructive feedback contribute to a more cohesive and successful co-authoring experience.

Schedule regular check-ins to discuss progress, address any challenges, and provide updates on individual contributions.

Maintaining appropriate communication while co-authoring is crucial for a successful partnership. Writers often need solitude to focus, but knowing when and how to communicate with your co-author is essential. Before diving into the project, establish some guidelines:

You can fine-tune these parameters as the project evolves, but having a shared understanding is most useful. Use video calls, emails, or collaborative tools to share drafts and gather feedback. Frequent communication helps maintain momentum and prevents the project from stalling.

Implement a robust version control system to keep track of changes made by each co-author. This helps avoid conflicting edits and ensures that everyone is working with the latest version.

In this phase, you will take the lead in coordinating the compilation of all chapters for the book. The editorial process will be actively engaged during this stage. Upon receiving the initial drafts from the authors, your responsibility will be to pass the draft to the editor for thorough editing. For a seamless editing process, I recommend utilizing the Word Document version for the draft.

The editor will employ mark-up and track changes throughout the document, allowing each author to review the editing results. Before sending the edited file back to the author, ensure that the editor has provided feedback and identified points for improvement within each chapter. Upon receiving the edited file, authors are required to address or respond to the editor’s comments and accept the tracked changes for grammatical revisions.

Following this, authors must return the revised chapter for further review until it reaches a state of completion, ensuring it is ready to be incorporated into the final manuscript. This collaborative approach aims to refine each chapter effectively and produce a polished manuscript for the book.

And to make everything even smoother, you choose a special place to keep your project safe and organized. It’s like having a virtual filing cabinet for your chapters. You may use google drive to save all the completed chapter that will be added to the manuscript.

5. Establish a Conflict Resolution Mechanism:

In the agreement that we organized, we divided the main point in three parts which are:

  1. Primary Terms of agreement

In the primary terms of the agreement, it specifies the commitment to a payment in exchange for the author’s contribution to the book. This payment affords the author the right to showcase their bio, featuring a high-resolution color photo, contact details, and website information within the book. The author is entitled to order books at the lowest price and will receive three complimentary paperback copies of the book. Notably, all proceeds from Amazon sales are designated for charitable purposes. Moreover, the agreement emphasizes that the author formally releases their chapter to the party overseeing the project for inclusion in the book. In summary, these terms comprehensively outline the financial arrangement, promotional considerations, and the respective rights and commitments pertaining to the author’s involvement in the co-authored book.

This point in the agreement addresses various scenarios related to the publication process and potential conflicts between us, as the lead author, and the contributor. In this agreement, we state that if the book is not published, we commit to refunding the author the full payment within 30 days of the decision or within three months after the intended publishing date, unless both parties agree to an extension.

Additionally, we mention that if the author fails to meet the chapter deadline, they must promptly notify us. We may then determine if unreasonable delays lead to their forfeiting inclusion in the book, along with any paid amount, without incurring additional financial obligations.

In the event of conflicts, both parties agree to resolve them initially through silent contemplation and conscious, nonviolent communication. If unsuccessful, we will involve a mutually agreed-upon, neutral third party to facilitate resolution.

In the additional provisions section, it is stated that if any provision of the agreement is deemed unenforceable by a court of competent jurisdiction, it will not impact the enforceability of other provisions.

Instead, the unenforceable provision will be modified to the necessary extent to make it enforceable, preserving the intent set forth by the parties. Furthermore, the contract we made is governed by the laws of the State of Western Australia within Australia.

Upon concluding the agreement, we will sign it to formally acknowledge its official status.

By implementing these strategies, co-authors can enhance their collaborative efforts, leading to a more efficient and successful co-authoring experience. Encourage open and honest communication about concerns, and be willing to compromise when necessary to keep the project moving forward.

As authors, we each have strengths and weaknesses, just like everyone else. However, when working as a team, we can come together and make those strong points even stronger. Of course, sometimes we push ourselves and each other to work on things outside our comfort zone, ultimately improving the overall quality of the book and making us stronger writers.

No matter what hurdles or bumps in the road you encounter, at the end of the day, authors are working together, pooling their imaginations, and creating something unprecedented. What could be better than that? If you let yourself have fun, relax, and enjoy the journey, we guarantee your readers will do the same when the book is done.

Step by step anything is possible…
